Another Game Seven for the History Books

The Avalanche and Lightning Will Battle in a Winner-Take-All Game 7

A Look Back at Some of the Most Memorable Game 7s in Stanley Cup Final History

The Stanley Cup Final is always a special time in the hockey world, but Game 7s are something else entirely. With everything on the line, these games often produce some of the most memorable moments in hockey history.

Only twice has a Game 7 gone to overtime in the Stanley Cup Final. The first time was in 1950, when the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in double overtime. The second time was in 2011, when the Boston Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks in overtime.

In 1950, Pete Babando scored the Cup-winning goal for the Red Wings in double overtime. It was a heart-breaking loss for the Maple Leafs, who had been looking to win their first Stanley Cup since 1942.

In 2011, the Bruins became the first visiting team to win a Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final in overtime. Nathan Horton scored the winning goal for the Bruins, who won their first Stanley Cup since 1972.

Both of these Game 7s were instant classics, and they will be remembered for years to come. With the Avalanche and Lightning set to battle in Game 7 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final, there's no doubt that we're in for another memorable game.
